The Demands Made by Black Community Members Are a Floor, Not a Ceiling

July 1, 2020

Santa Barbara is a generous and responsive community. One need only look to the outpouring of response to the Thomas Fire and Mudslides and the response to COVID-19 to see that when an emergency rises up, people across Santa Barbara County - indeed the whole Central Coast - rise up to meet it. From individuals to nonprofit organizations to funders and donors, it is inspiring and a source of great hope to see how quickly people and resources can be mobilized to respond. Now is the time to direct the same level of intention to advancing racial justice.

To Our Community

June 3, 2020

Like so many others, our team at Just Communities has spent this past week feeling and struggling. Feeling the weight of yet one more tragic killing of a black man. Feeling our own hurt, anger, rage, and sadness. Feeling, especially, the hurt of our friends, loved ones, and our fellow community members who see themselves in George Floyd, Christian Cooper, Breonna Taylor, and so many others whose names are known and not known; whose lives have been taken because of the racism in our society.

CLI and IEE Cancelled Due to COVID-19

June 18, 2020

The realities of continued physical distancing means that we must cancel our June IEE and July CLI programs. This was an extremely difficult decision to make because of how important these programs are in advancing social justice in our communities. The loss of these programs this summer will be felt by those of us who work so hard to make them happen and our communities who struggle with both old and new inequities in the face of COVID-19. However, our first priority is to ensure the health and safety of our participants, volunteers, and staff. CLI and IEE will not happen this summer, but our work to foster a more equitable and inclusive Central Coast is NOT paused

Fulfilling our Mission during the COVID-19 Pandemic

May 5, 2020

We hope you and your family are doing as well as possible under these challenging circumstances.  This pandemic has brought to light the many inequalities that have been impacting our communities for decades now. The question is how do we facilitate the discussion and set forth action plans to resolve inequities in a meaningful way? In a manner that not only serves as a temporary band-aid, but where a foundation is set to build upon a better future.
