Custom Training & Consultation

Just Communities works with community members, nonprofits, organizations, and businesses both locally and across the country to develop Customized Training and Consultation workshops tailored to the specific needs of our clients. Our workshops take an intersectional  approach, using race as a lens through which we can examine other identities and experiences including, but not limited to class, immigration, and gender .

Intersectionality - Intersectionality is a theoretical framework that examines the complicated experiences of holding multiple identities across race, class, immigration status/citizen, nationality, ethnicity, gender, educational background, language, etc.The term was originally coined by Kimberle Crenshaw in 1989 in her paper for the University of Chicago Legal Forum titled “Demarginalizing the Intersection of Race and Sex: A Black Feminist Critique of Antidiscrimination Doctrine, Feminist Theory and Antiracist Politics”.

Gender - Gender is understood as an institution that assigns expected behavioral norms, attitudes, and responsibilities based on one's body type or perceived body type. Gender is not an inherent property of an individual or body type (“The Invention of Women: Making African Sense of Western Gender Discourse” by Oyeronke Oyewumi)

Common Language

IMG-3747.jpg
Just Communities’ Common Language Workshop is often the first step for our consulting work. The goal of this workshop is to develop a foundational understanding of key terms and frameworks relating to identity including, but not limited to race , ethnicity , xenophobia , and colonialism . The purpose of this workshop is to build a foundational understanding of key terms in frameworks to ground our future conversations in a common understanding. Each Common Language Workshop is tailored to the specific needs of our clients by exploring how these key terms and frameworks impact their job sector and/or organization.

Just Communities works with clients to develop an Action Plan based on Pre- and Post-Assements of the organizations to help guide future conversations and/or work tailored to those clients needs.
